What is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy is a type of treatment you may need when health problems make it hard to move around and do everyday tasks. It helps you move better and may relieve pain. Phyiscial therapy also helps improve or restore your physical function and your fitness level.

The goal of physical therapy is to make daily tasks and activities easier. For example, it may help with walking, going up stairs, or getting in and out of bed.

Physical therapy can help with recovery after some surgeries. Our doctor may suggest physical therapy for injuries or long-term health problems such as:

  • Back and Neck pain
  • Tendon or ligament problems, such as an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, a meniscus tear, or plantar fasciitis
  • Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Spinal Stenosis, sciatica, or herniated disc
  • Shoulder or elbow pain, such as tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, shoulder impingement, or RTC (Rotator Cuff)
  • Sprains or Strains

What to Expect From Your Physical Therapist

Physical therapists apply research and validated techniques to help patients get back in motion. All physical therapists are required to earn a graduate degree, either a masters or a clinical doctorate, from an accredited physical therapist school before taking the national licensing test which makes it possible for them to practice. State licenses are required in every state in which a physical therapist practices. They are trusted health care professionals with considerable clinical experience who examine, diagnose, and then help prevent or treat conditions that reduce the body’s ability to move and function in daily life.

Blending science with motivation, your physical therapist will teach you how to prevent or handle a health problem and help motivate you during your treatment so you can function optimally. Your physical therapist will work with you to help you understand your body so you will reach long-term health benefits. A physical therapist is your partner throughout your journey to reviving and maintaining motion so that you can perform at your personal best.
